— A San Diego garden practice

Gardens drawn
by hand,
built by gardeners.

Garner is a small landscape design practice working across coastal San Diego — from La Jolla bluff gardens to Encinitas natives to Mediterranean courtyards in Mission Hills. We design slowly, plant intentionally, and stay involved long after the install is finished.

"A garden does not announce itself. It rewards return."

We believe a garden is not a product — it is a relationship, negotiated over years between soil, climate, plant, and the person who walks it daily.

— The Practice

How we work.

Garner is a small practice by design. We take on a limited number of projects each year so we can stay close to each one through installation, the first dry summer, and the seasons after.

01
Discovery & site walk
We spend a half day on your site — measuring, listening, photographing the light, taking soil samples, asking how you actually use the space. We leave with a written brief that becomes the design contract.
From $650
02
Concept & hand-drawn plans
Three concepts, drawn by hand in graphite and watercolor on archival paper. We present in person, revise the chosen direction together, and produce a full planting plan with sourced material lists. Two rounds of revision included.
From $3,400
03
Hardscape & installation
Pathways, walls, fountains, irrigation, mature plant installation. Our crew has worked together since 2014. We pull permits where required, document everything, and finish on the quoted date 96% of the time. (The other 4% gets a written explanation.)
Quoted by scope
04
Stewardship & second-year care
Every Garner garden includes two years of seasonal site visits. We come back to prune, divide, replace anything that didn't take, and adjust the design where reality has informed it. This is the part most firms skip.
Included 2 yr
05
Ongoing seasonal craft
For clients who want it, a monthly or quarterly maintenance arrangement at year three onward — pruning, planting, swap-outs, coaching for owners who want to learn their garden themselves.
From $340/mo
— A Gardener's Year

The garden in
twelve months.

San Diego's coastal climate runs on its own calendar — a long mild autumn, a brief wet winter, and a long dry summer that asks differently of every plant. This is what we're doing in your garden each month, and what you can do alongside us.

Late winter · cool & damp

The quietest month and the gardener's planning month. Soil is cool, days are short, and rain — when it comes — is welcome. We're pruning roses, lifting and dividing perennials, and drawing plans for spring installs that will go in by March.
